Short-Term & Medium-Term Accommodation in the Illawarra

Sometimes life shifts quickly, and what you need is somewhere safe and comfortable to stay for a while. Short-Term Accommodation, often called STA or respite, and Medium-Term Accommodation, known as MTA, gives you a place to stay with support around you, whether you’re taking a break, waiting on your next home, or working through a change in your life.

We’re BB Disability & Mental Health Services, a registered NDIS provider based in Dapto, with a team grounded in disability support, mental health, and social work. We support people across Wollongong, Dapto, Kiama, and the wider Illawarra.

Time away from home, a break for family or carers, or waiting on a longer-term option, whatever’s happening right now, you don’t need to work it out alone. We’ll listen properly, walk through your options in words that make sense, and help you find the next step when you’re ready.

What Your Stay Could Look Like

What Your Stay Could Look Like

Everyone’s situation is different, so no two stays look exactly the same. With STA or MTA support across the Illawarra, you may stay for a short planned break, a few days away from your usual routine or a longer period while you wait for your next home.

What a stay might look like

  • Arrival day: someone there to welcome you, help you settle in and make sure you feel comfortable in your new space.
  • During the week: support with meals, personal care, medication prompts where appropriate, daily routines, shopping, appointments and activities you enjoy.
  • Time for yourself: quiet time at home, getting out into the community, seeing family, enjoying hobbies or simply taking a breath from your usual routine.
  • Before you leave: talking through what comes next, whether that means returning home, moving into a new place or organising other support around you.

Short-Term and Medium-Term Accommodation can be funded through your NDIS plan, depending on your needs, goals and current situation. We’ll talk through what may be possible without making it feel complicated or overwhelming. When you’re ready, say hello or make a referral, and we’ll start the conversation together.

Why the Illawarra Trusts Our NDIS Support

  • We’re a local NDIS provider, not a call centre somewhere else, and we know the Illawarra and its communities.
  • We reply within 2 working hours on any weekday, not when we get around to it.
  • Mental health support is part of what we do every day, not something added on at the end.
  • We support people with physical, intellectual and psychosocial disabilities.
  • We understand that a temporary stay still needs to feel safe, calm and comfortable.
  • We take the time to understand your routine, support needs and the things that help you feel at home.
  • You stay in charge. We ask, we listen, and we adjust as your needs change.
  • We’re fully registered with the NDIS and follow the NDIS Practice Standards in the way we support people.

A stay away from home should not feel like being put on hold. It can be time to rest, reset, build confidence or take the next step towards something new.

How Does This Actually Start?

Get in touch when it suits you

A call to 1300 070 724 or a message by email is all it takes to start.

Tell us what’s going on

We’ll talk through why accommodation would help, roughly how long you might need it, the support you already use day to day, and what would make your stay comfortable.

We find what fits

If something suitable is available, we’ll walk through the details and help you get ready to arrive. Your support team will know your routine and preferences before your first day.
Take whatever time you need, reach out or make a referral when you’re ready.

Where Do We Support STA and MTA
Across the Illawarra?

Our STA and MTA support reaches Wollongong, Dapto, Kiama, and the surrounding Illawarra. A short break near home or somewhere to land while you sort out your next move, either one is a conversation worth having with us.

We also run Supported Independent Living, Specialist Disability Accommodation, In-Home Support, Community Access and Activities, Support Coordination, and Psychosocial Recovery Coaching alongside STA and MTA. A temporary stay can be one piece of a much bigger transition, so there’s no harm in laying out every option at once.

STA is a temporary stay, giving you a break, new experiences, or support away from home. MTA tends to suit someone waiting on a longer-term housing option. We’re happy to talk through your situation and work out which one applies.

Yes. STA offers a change of environment and support for you, while your family or carers get time to rest, manage other commitments, or simply recharge. It should feel positive for everyone involved.

That comes down to your support needs, the type of accommodation, and what’s included in your NDIS plan. Some stays are a short break, while MTA can run longer as you wait for your next home.
If something suitable is available, we can arrange a visit. Seeing the space, asking questions, and taking your time all help you feel more settled before deciding.
Your plan, your goals, and your current situation all shape what’s available. If you’re unsure, our Support Coordination team can help you make sense of your plan and work out the next step.
